A Naturopath’s Essential Travellers First Aid Kit for Bali

Since getting back from Bali, everyone’s been asking the same question: Did you manage to avoid Bali Belly? I’m happy to say [we all did], and now I want to share how you can too. Traveling to a tropical paradise like Bali is an unforgettable experience, but it can also come with a few health challenges. That’s why having a well-stocked first aid kit filled with essential supplements and products is a game-changer for staying healthy and enjoying your holiday.

My Essential Supplements for a Healthy Bali Holiday

1. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a must-have in any travel kit. This powerful antioxidant supports your immune system, which is essential when you’re exposed to new environments, foods, and potential pathogens. Traveling can put stress on your body, so keeping your immune system strong with a daily dose of vitamin C is a simple yet effective way to stay healthy.

Fun Skin Fact! A good quality Vitamin C serum plays a significant role in sun protection when used alongside SPF. Here are some interesting facts about how it helps:

  • Enhances Sun Protection: Vitamin C, when used in conjunction with sunscreen, can boost the skin’s defense against UV rays. It doesn’t replace SPF but complements it by neutralising free radicals produced by UV exposure.

  • Reduces Sun Damage: Vitamin C helps to reduce sunburn and minimise sun damage by inhibiting the formation of free radicals caused by UVA and UVB rays. This makes it an effective ingredient for preventing photoaging (premature aging of the skin due to sun exposure).

  • Brightens Skin: Regular use of vitamin C can help fade hyperpigmentation, such as sunspots or age spots, by inhibiting melanin production. This gives the skin a brighter, more even tone.

2. Zinc

Zinc is another key player in immune health. It helps with healing and can reduce the severity and duration of colds. More importantly for travel, zinc plays a crucial role in protecting your gut lining, which acts as a barrier against any harmful bacteria. Keeping your zinc levels up means giving your body the support it needs to reduce the risk of digestive upset.

3. Probiotics – Specifically Saccharomyces boulardii

When it comes to preventing Bali Belly, Saccharomyces boulardii (SB)is my top probiotic pick. SB is known for its effectiveness in preventing and managing gastrointestinal issues, including traveler’s diarrhoea. It helps maintain a healthy balance of gut flora, ensuring that your digestive system is well-prepared for any challenges. Start taking Saccharomyces boulardii about 2-3 weeks before your trip and continue throughout your stay.

4. Partially Hydrolyzed Guar Gum (PHGG)

PHGG is a gentle prebiotic fibre that’s fantastic for gut health. It nourishes the beneficial bacteria in your gut, promoting a balanced microbiome, crucial for a strong immune system and good digestion function. PHGG is particularly helpful in keeping your digestion regular, even when you’re trying out new and exotic foods.

5. Enterosgel

Enterosgel is a cellulose gel that works like a sponge in your gut, absorbing toxins, allergens, and pathogens. This makes it an excellent first line of defense IF you start to experience any digestive discomfort or suspect you’ve eaten something questionable. Enterosgel helps your body eliminate these harmful substances, providing relief from symptoms like diarrhea and stomach cramps.

6. Activated Charcoal

Activated charcoal is highly effective for digestive upsets, including food poisoning. It binds to toxins in the stomach and intestines, preventing them from being absorbed into your bloodstream. If you start feeling off after a meal, activated charcoal can help alleviate symptoms quickly, making it a must-have in your travel kit. NOTE: Activated charcoal can interact with other supplements and medications, potentially affecting their absorption and effectiveness so only take a few hours away and only as directed.

Additional Tips for Staying Healthy

While these supplements are my go-tos for avoiding Bali Belly, there are a few more tips to keep in mind:

  • Stay Hydrated: Always drink bottled water, and be cautious with ice unless you’re sure it’s made from purified water.

  • Be Mindful with Food: Opt for freshly cooked meals and be selective with street food, particularly if it’s been sitting out.

  • Keep Your Hands Clean: Regularly wash your hands or use hand sanitizer, especially before eating.

Remember! Traveling is all about creating beautiful memories, and by taking these simple precautions, you can ensure your Bali adventure is as healthy as it is exciting. Pack these essentials in your first aid kit, and you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy every moment without worrying about Bali Belly.
